  • Smiling Through It When You're Running On Empty

You don’t want anyone to ask if you’re ok, because you’re just about holding the tears in, so you keep that painted smile on your face in case everything spills over. You keep going because if you stop it feels like everything will fall apart. Your nervous system can’t heal when you’re pretending you’re fine. It needs honesty, gentleness, and space to breathe. Smiling through it isn’t strength. It’s you holding yourself together the only way you know how. It’s the part of you that wakes up, gets dressed, and moves through the day because you feel you have to. You show up, you reply to messages, you make small talk, you even laugh at the right moments. From the outside it looks like you’re coping. Inside, you’re running on fumes. It’s a tiredness that doesn’t shift, no matter how much you rest. That numbness where you’re doing everything you’re supposed to do, but you don’t feel connected to any of it. It’s being there, but not really there. When you've been carrying too much, your body whispers before it shouts. Calm isn’t something you think your way into. It’s something your body feels. And calm isn’t the only way your body recognises safety. Safety can be found in small glimmers, a moment of connection, a breath that softens your chest, a walk outside, a gentle touch, a quiet pause. A healthy nervous system isn’t one that stays calm all the time. It’s one that can move between states with more ease, softening when it can, grounding when it needs to, rising when life asks for it. But when you’re overwhelmed, you put the mask on because you don’t feel like you have another choice. You keep functioning even when your whole body is whispering please stop. Not because you’re unbreakable, but because slowing down feels like everything might fall apart. So you keep going. You keep smiling. And people assume you’re fine because you’re good at hiding the cracks. And then there’s the pressure, to be pleasant, patient, kind, composed — even when you’re barely holding yourself together. So you stay in survival mode, even when your body is quietly asking for a moment of softness. And sometimes you feel off because you’re carrying things that didn’t start with you. On the days you have only forty percent, and you give forty percent, you gave one hundred percent. Here’s the truth you lose sight of when you’re in that place. You’re a human being. Not super human. You’re allowed to feel tired. You’re allowed to feel fragile. You’re allowed to rest without guilt. You’re allowed to meet yourself exactly where you are, without forcing yourself to be anywhere else. You don’t have to wait until you’re at breaking point. You don’t have to wait until you’re falling apart to deserve support. You don’t need a reason. Feeling overwhelmed is reason enough. Feeling disconnected is reason enough. Wanting to feel more like yourself again is reason enough. And if you’ve been holding everything in for so long that even a simple “Are you okay” could undo you, that isn’t weakness. It’s a sign you’ve been carrying too much alone. You don’t have to keep doing that. You’re allowed to put the mask down. You’re allowed to breathe. You’re allowed to let someone meet you gently, at your pace, in a way that helps your system soften instead of brace. At Serenities Path in Shrewsbury, the space I offer is held with the same gentleness. I meet you where you're at. Nikki

  • Reiki in Shrewsbury & Beyond: Gentle Healing Wherever You Are

Reiki is something I love sharing because it’s gentle, calming, and works in ways that often surprise people. Many imagine Reiki as something that has to be done in person, with hands placed lightly over the body. That’s true — and it’s a beautiful experience. But Reiki isn’t limited by distance. Distance Reiki allows me to send healing energy wherever you are. Whether you’re at home in Shrewsbury, away at university, or even living abroad, Reiki can still reach you. Reiki is a gentle form of energy healing that promotes relaxation and balance. Energy doesn’t need us to be in the same room — it flows where it’s needed. How Distance Reiki Works We connect beforehand to agree on a time together. At that time, you simply relax in a quiet space — even resting in bed is perfect. I then send Reiki using intention and symbols, allowing the energy to flow to you wherever you are. Afterwards, we speak again to reflect on your experience. Clients often tell me they feel warmth, tingling, or a deep sense of peace — whether in person or at a distance. Many also notice they sleep more soundly afterwards or feel lighter emotionally. And yes, it’s absolutely fine if you drift off to sleep during a session. The energy continues to flow whether you’re awake or asleep. People often worry if they snore — and that’s really not a problem at all. During Reiki, people may notice sensations such as warmth, coolness, tingling, or pulsing. Others describe feeling lighter, deeply relaxed, or emotionally released. Every response is unique — each session will feel different, because each time you bring something new to the experience. Many people wonder how Reiki works. I often share this quote: "We trust invisible waves to power our Wi‑Fi every day — Reiki works with similar unseen energies of frequency and vibration.”  What to Expect in a Reiki Session I offer 30‑minute, 45‑minute, and 60‑minute sessions, with longer options available if required. Sessions can also be combined with my other bespoke therapies as part of a mind‑body and somatic healing approach. There’s no special preparation needed, though I recommend staying hydrated with water before and after your session. Before your first session, you’ll also complete a client consultation form, so I can tailor the experience to your needs. Reiki can be received alongside other treatments or therapies, offering supportive balance without interfering with medical care. Many people use Reiki as a complementary therapy to ease stress, promote relaxation, and support wellbeing. Benefits of Reiki: Stress reduction Relaxation Pain relief Emotional balance Improved sleep Immune support Enhanced mental clarity Boosting energy levels Supporting overall wellbeing Suitable for all ages My Reiki Journey I began my Reiki journey after experiencing its gentle yet powerful effects for myself, many years ago. The calm, balance, and sense of reconnection it brought me were transformative, and it soon became part of a wider holistic path that I now share with my clients at Serenities Path. I continued my training and am now a Reiki Master, which allows me to offer Reiki at a deeper level and to teach it to others. For me, Reiki is more than a therapy — it’s a way of life, and I feel privileged to share that gift with clients in Shrewsbury and beyond. I am also a member of the Reiki Federation, the largest professional Reiki organisation in the UK. This membership means I follow recognised standards of practice, ethics, and training. It reassures clients that my work is professional, accountable, and aligned with the wider Reiki community. Reiki can also be a gentle, supportive tool to help children ease anxiety, sleep better, and feel calmer. Reiki in Professional Settings Reiki practitioners can be found in hospitals, veterinary practices, hospices, and many other organisations, where its gentle support complements traditional care. Reiki and Special Situations Reiki can be received in pregnancy, offering calm and balance for both mother and baby. Reiki is also used in hospitals, hospices, and cancer support centres as a complementary therapy. While it does not treat or cure medical conditions, many people find it helps ease stress, promote relaxation, and support emotional wellbeing alongside their medical care. Reiki and Changing Perspectives Reiki is for everyone. It's been encouraging to see more people from all walks of life - regardless of age, gender, or identity - discover it's gentle support. Reiki Options I n‑Person Reiki — gentle, calming sessions at my practice Distance Reiki — healing energy wherever you are, perfect if you can’t travel Mobile Reiki — I can come to you, making Reiki accessible in the comfort of your own home Pop‑Up Reiki — you can also find me at the beautiful Lily M on Castle Street, Shrewsbury, every other Wednesday for Wellbeing Wednesday sessions. Gift of Wellbeing Vouchers I also offer Gift of Wellbeing Vouchers — the gift that keeps on giving. These can be posted out or picked up locally, including at Lily M, Shrewsbury, making them a thoughtful way to share Reiki with someone special. Sharing a Client’s Words “I had the most beautiful long distance Reiki session with Nikki last week — honestly, it was incredible. Even though she wasn't in the room (I was snuggled up in my duvet at home), I still felt the same calming, soothing energy flowing through my body, just as if she were there beside me. The whole experience was deeply relaxing & grounding. The next day, I felt full of energy & rebalanced. If you've ever been curious about Reiki or wondered whether long distance sessions really work, well, I can tell you that they do, & are just as powerful as in‑person sessions. I've had many Reiki sessions with Nikki & I can’t recommend her enough.” Final Thoughts Whether you choose to come for an in‑person session, try distance Reiki, book mobile Reiki, or join me at Lily M, Shrewsbury, the intention is always the same: to help you feel balanced, calmer, and more connected to yourself. Reiki also supports your body’s natural ability to build its own immunity, working hand‑in‑hand with the mind‑body connection and somatic healing approach. Alongside my other offerings at Serenities Path — EFT, mindfulness, Indian Head Massage, walk & talk therapy, and holistic therapy — the focus is always on helping you heal from within. • Winter Wellbeing: Navigating The Season With Compassion

As the days shorten and nights stretch longer, many are overwhelmed with a mix of emotions. The end of the year can bring both reflection and an acknowledgement of struggles we may have faced. In this season of transition, it's important to recognise the emotional complexities that come with it. November brings with it a sense of reflection, yet it can also highlight personal struggles. This time of year often intensifies feelings of loss, disconnection, and unmet expectations. For some, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) adds to the weight of it all. Personally, this time of year brings a wave of grief for me. From late August to December, I find myself reflecting on my late mum and dad's birthdays, as well as the anniversary of their passing. My body knows this time all too well, and I've learned to listen to its whispers. Walking with my dog, Ava, and immersing myself in nature helps me navigate these feelings. I also practice Reiki self-healing and mindfulness to nurture my wellbeing. I incorporate mindfulness techniques during walk-and-talk therapy, and my therapy dog, Ava, comes along when appropriate. This approach provides a supportive space for individuals to share their experiences and emotions while benefiting from the healing power of nature. Acknowledging these feelings is essential: it helps us connect and reminds us that we’re not alone. With this awareness, we can explore heartfelt strategies to navigate the season. Here are some that may guide you through this time: Create Comfort: Surround yourself with soothing scents, delightful textures, and your favourite comforting drinks. Bring your favourite colours into your space and wardrobe - you'll often find me wearing blue, as it brings me such joy! Remember, creating a nurturing environment can lift your spirits. Prioritise Self-Care: Create a self-care plan that aligns with your wellbeing, focusing on mental and physical health. Self-Connection : While you may feel the urge to retreat, it's important to remember that self-connection is valuable; you shouldn't isolate yourself. Striking a balance between the two can help you navigate your feelings more effectively during this season. Build a Support Network; Surround yourself with uplifting people who share your thoughts and feelings can lighten the load. In addition to creating a support system, setting meaningful expectations and focusing on quality connections are equally important. Mind Your Boundaries; Be conscious of your personal limits and honour them. Allow Space for Grief:  It’s important to acknowledge and honour your emotions, as they reflect our deep connections. Embracing these feelings creates room for healing. Practising gratitude can help balance your grief by reminding you of the joy intertwined with your memories. Remember, it’s ok to feel, and in doing so, you create a pathway to peace. Look for Glimmers: Engage in "awe hunting" by seeking out small moments of joy each day. Practice Gratitude: Take time to appreciate what brings you joy. Reflecting on personal growth enhances resilience during these times and reminds us to focus on the present. Engage in Acts of Kindness: Helping others nurtures a sense of purpose and community. Additionally, creating comforting rituals, such as enjoying a warm drink or reading a good book, can bring moments of joy. Nourish Yourself: Feed your body wholesome foods. Embrace nature therapy, practise breathing techniques, and explore healing therapies like reiki, which many of my clients find helpful during this time. Enjoy Nature: Spend time outdoors, even if just for a short walk. Nature is a powerful healer for our mental health and wellbeing. Listen to Uplifting Music or Podcasts: Curate a playlist or tune into inspiring content that lifts your spirits. Practice Mindfulness and Meditation: These techniques help ground you and alleviate anxiety. Further Tips for Holistic Wellbeing : As a therapist, I believe in a holistic approach to mental health, and I've refined my wellness routine to embody this: Get Cosy: Create a warm and inviting atmosphere at home; wrap yourself in a blanket or weighted blanket, or wear your comfortable clothes. Stay Hydrated and Nourished : Drink plenty of fluids and prepare hearty meals that nourish both the body and spirit. Mindful Movement: Engage in gentle exercises such as yoga or stretching to keep your body active and focused. Connect with Others: Reach out to friends and family, whether through a simple message or a meet-up. Keep to a Sleep Schedule: Good sleep hygiene can help regulate your mood. Embrace the Slower Pace : Allow yourself to slow down and take the opportunity to rest and recharge. Invest in a SAD Lamp: If you struggle with the lack of sunlight, consider using a lamp for light therapy to help elevate your mood. Finding Peace Through Reiki : As a Reiki Master Practitioner based in Shrewsbury, I’ve seen first hand the importance of compassionate self-care during the winter months. With this in mind, let’s explore how Reiki can enhance our wellbeing during this time. Reiki can be a powerful tool for navigating the winter months, promoting relaxation, reducing stress, and nurturing emotional healing. Consider scheduling a Reiki session as part of your self-care routine to release pent-up emotions and promote tranquillity. Addressing Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Reiki can help alleviate symptoms by promoting relaxation, reducing stress, radiating warmth and uplifting your mood throughout the colder months. As author Suzy Reading beautifully put it -  "You're not lazy or weak. It's just winter!" If autumn invites us to let go, winter is our opportunity to rest and nurture ourselves after a busy year.  I highly recommend her book: Self-Care for Winter:  which offers wonderful insights for this season. As we navigate the darker months, it's important to check in with ourselves. So take a moment to express your feelings, observe how they change, and recognise both shadows and light. Remember, you're not alone in your journey. Together, we can find moments of brightness and reflect on the shadows. As the year wraps up, embrace the mix of emotions that arise. Practising self-care and allowing space for grief can nurture healing and connection. Remember, you’re not alone. ~ Nikki

  • The Power Of Self-Compassion: Nurturing Your Mental Health And Wellbeing

In our fast-paced and often demanding world, taking care of our mental health and overall wellbeing is becoming increasingly crucial. One topic that continues to gain traction in the field of mental health is self-compassion.  Self-compassion involves treating ourselves with the same kindness and understanding that we would offer to a close friend in times of struggle or failure. It's about acknowledging our own humanity, and imperfections, and embracing ourselves with a sense of empathy.  Research has shown that practising self-compassion can lead to greater emotional resilience, reduced levels of anxiety and depression, and an overall improved sense of wellbeing. By cultivating self-compassion, we can learn to be more gentle and forgiving towards ourselves, especially during challenging moments. In therapy, incorporating self-compassion practices can be transformative. By learning to be more self-compassionate, clients can create a more nurturing and supportive inner dialogue, leading to a healthier relationship with themselves and others.  Whether through mindfulness exercises or self-care routines, there are various ways to nurture self-compassion and prioritise mental health. As a therapist, guiding clients on their journey towards self-compassion can pave the way for profound healing and personal growth. Remember, you deserve kindness and understanding from yourself just as much as anyone else. Embracing self-compassion is a powerful step towards nurturing your mental health and overall wellbeing. Take the time to explore this practice and witness the positive impact it can have on your life. 5 Tips To Help You Be More Self-Compassionate: Practice Mindfulness:  Take time to observe your thoughts and feelings without judgment. Mindfulness helps you become aware of your inner critic and allows you to respond to yourself with kindness and understanding. Treat Yourself Like a Friend: Consider how you would support a friend who is going through a tough time. Apply the same level of care, empathy, and encouragement to yourself when facing challenges or setbacks. Challenge Negative Self-Talk: When you catch yourself being self-critical, challenge those negative thoughts. Replace them with more realistic and compassionate self-talk. Remember, nobody is perfect, and it's ok  to make mistakes. Prioritise Self-Care:  Show yourself love and respect by prioritising self-care activities that nurture your physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing. Doing the things that bring you joy, that could look like, simply being! Just so long as it recharges and rejuvenates you. Celebrate Your Achievements: Acknowledge your accomplishments, no matter how big or small. Take pride in your efforts and progress, and celebrate your successes along the way. Recognising your achievements can boost your self-esteem and reinforce self-compassion. • A Guide To Calmness and Healing

When life becomes overwhelming and stress starts to creep in, it's common to experience a heightened sense of urgency, multitask, and have many plates spinning!  This automatic reaction of speeding up is a direct response to the fight-or-flight within us.  However, it's important to recognise the significance of listening to your body's whispers and emotions instead of suppressing them and to be gentle with yourself.  Three Techniques To Try:  Mindfulness, breathing techniques, and grounding practices support invaluable tools in managing stress and enhancing overall wellbeing. By incorporating mindfulness into our daily routines, we can nurture an awareness of the present moment, allowing us to acknowledge our thoughts and feelings without judgment. This heightened sense of self-awareness enables us to respond to stressors more effectively, rather than react impulsively. Mindfulness Tip:  When mindfully drinking a warm drink, such as a comforting cup of tea or coffee, the experience can become a soothing mindfulness practice. Start by holding the cup in your hands and noticing its warmth and texture. Take a moment to inhale the aroma, letting the scent fill your senses. As you take a sip, pay attention to the taste and temperature of the drink on your tongue. Feel the liquid as it travels down your throat, warming you from the inside out. Allow yourself to fully immerse in the present moment, savouring each sip mindfully and appreciating the simple pleasure of enjoying a warm drink. This practice can help you slow down, connect with your senses, and bring a sense of peace and relaxation to your day. Breathing techniques, such as deep breathing exercises or box breathing, play a pivotal role in calming the nervous system and reducing anxiety levels. Box Breathing: Also known as square breathing, is a relaxation technique that involves a simple, four-part breathing pattern. To practice box breathing, start by sitting comfortably. Inhale deeply through your nose for a count of four seconds, allowing your breath to fill your lungs. Hold your breath for another count of four. Slowly exhale through your mouth for a count of four, ensuring you release all the air from your lungs. Finally, pause at the end of the exhale for another count of four before beginning the cycle again. Repeat this sequence as many times as you wish, focusing on the rhythmic pattern of your breath. Grounding: Walking barefoot is a profoundly underrated health practice that has been shown to reduce cortisol levels, alleviate inflammation, accelerate healing, enhance sleep quality, and boost thyroid function. Interacting with the earth in this way can be remarkably soothing for the nervous system, quickly deactivating the fight-or-flight response and nourishing healing through the parasympathetic system.  And it's free! Why not give it a go… kick off your shoes and connect bare skin to earth to benefit. In essence, the combination supports a holistic approach to coping with stress and anxiety. By actively listening to our body embracing mindfulness practices, and incorporating grounding into our lives, we equip ourselves with the tools, a tangible anchor,  necessary to navigate challenging circumstances with resilience and grace.  It's through these practices that we can nurture a deeper sense of self-awareness and nourish our emotional wellbeing. Small changes can lead to significant improvements over time.  Personally, these techniques supported me through a challenging period when I lost both my dear parents, my mum unexpectedly and within a short timeframe of each other.  I hope they bring you comfort too. ~ Nikki

  • The Healing Power Of Reiki For Young Adults and Children

In a world where children and young adults face various challenges, incorporating Reiki energy healing into their lives can make a significant difference. Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive healing method that nurtures and comforts, promoting deep relaxation and emotional balance. During a Reiki session, children experience their body's natural healing response, releasing tension, detoxifying, and achieving mental and emotional equilibrium. Many describe the sensation as a warm, glowing energy that grounds them, nurturing a deeper connection with themselves and others, especially when feeling detached from the world. This practice can be particularly beneficial for children with learning disabilities, or emotional struggles by realigning their energy fields. During exam time, both children and young adults often experience heightened levels of anxiety and pressure. This is where Reiki, a gentle and non-invasive form of energy healing, can offer significant benefits. By promoting relaxation, reducing stress, and nurturing a sense of balance and calm, Reiki can help students navigate through their exams with a clearer mind and a more focused approach. The healing energy of Reiki can aid in improving concentration, enhancing clarity of thought, and boosting overall wellbeing. Incorporating Reiki into their routine during this time can provide students with a valuable, calming tool. As a Reiki Master and Mindfulness Practitioner, I have witnessed first hand the transformative impact of Reiki on young individuals. It can effectively reduce temper tantrums, fears, anxiety, depression, sleep issues, and physical ailments, alongside the emotionally challenging problems that children and young adults face in today's world. Empowering children to navigate the complexities of growing up. Introducing Reiki to young adults and children opens a gateway to emotional resilience, mental clarity, and overall wellbeing. By embracing this ancient healing technique, we pave the way for a brighter, more balanced future for the next generation. If you would like more information Click Here ~ Nikki

  • Nature's Healing: A Guide To Outdoor Therapy and Walk and Talk Sessions

Walk & Talk Therapy, also known as Outdoor or Walking Therapy, leverages the healing benefits of being outside and the calming effects of nature. It provides a unique alternative to traditional indoor therapy sessions. Spending time outdoors in nature and natural light has been shown to have a positive effect on mental health and overall wellbeing. The sights, sounds, and smells of the natural environment can help to reduce stress and anxiety and promote a sense of calm and relaxation. Walking side by side, encourages fluidity of thought and can create a more informal and relaxed atmosphere. Here are just some of the benefits:   Improve mood   Increase energy   Reduce tension and anxiety   Cope with stress   Improve sleep   Increase feelings of wellbeing Walk & Talk Therapy provides a confidential and comfortable space for individuals to open up and discuss their concerns. Being outdoors allows for a sense of privacy while also being surrounded by the natural world, which can evoke a feeling of peace and tranquility. The speed of the walk is based on your pace. Whether you prefer a stroll or a brisk pace, I  will adjust accordingly. Additionally, if you feel the need to pause and collect your thoughts, I ensure that there are benches to sit on the route. • Coping With Anxiety About Change

Coping with anxiety about change can be challenging, especially as we enter into a new year with the potential for various shifts in our lives. Whether it's a new job, a change in a relationship, a move to a new home, or a focus on health and wellbeing, these changes can often trigger anxiety and stress. Here are some tips to help navigate through these transitions: Start Small: When it comes to making changes, it's important to start small. Break down your goals into manageable steps to avoid feeling overwhelmed. This can help reduce anxiety and make the process more achievable. Change can bring about many unexpected feelings, and talking them out with someone you trust or writing them down may help you process them. Seek Therapy: Talking to a professional can provide valuable support as you navigate through changes. Therapy can offer coping strategies, a safe space to express your concerns, and guidance for managing anxiety and stress during transitions. Consider Alternative Therapies: In addition to traditional therapy, some individuals find reiki therapy to be beneficial for managing stress, anxiety, and promoting overall wellbeing. Reiki is a form of alternative therapy that focuses on energy healing and can provide a sense of relaxation and balance. Practice Self-Care: Engage in activities that promote self-care and relaxation. This might include practising mindfulness, yoga, meditation, walking, reading, or simply taking time for yourself to unwind, recharge and simply be. Lean on Support Systems: Don't hesitate to lean on friends, family, or support groups during times of change. Having a strong support system can provide comfort, guidance, and reassurance as you navigate through transitions. Focus on Health and Wellbeing: Prioritise self-care by nurturing mental and physical wellbeing. Supporting your overall wellbeing by moving your body daily, incorporating regular exercise, maintaining a balanced diet, keeping hydrated, and staying well-rested with enough sleep. Change is a natural part of life, and it's normal to experience anxiety during times of transition. By taking small manageable steps and seeking appropriate support, it is possible to cope with anxiety and embrace change with a sense of resilience and strength. ~ Nikki

  • I hope in 2024 That You:

As the new year is upon us, it's important to consider ways to approach it with self-compassion and mindfulness. As a therapist with a focus on mental health, wellbeing, and mindfulness, I believe that setting New Year's resolutions isn't always necessary. Each person's journey is unique, and there's no pressure to reinvent yourself completely. Instead, aim to nurture and be kind to yourself. If you feel overwhelmed about the idea of resolutions, remember that it's okay not to set them. Taking a moment for self-reflection can be valuable. Consider what felt challenging, what brought you joy, and what lessons you've learned over the past year. Reflect on what you're proud of and what you can let go of. One word to encapsulate the year can help you distil your experiences. In 2024, I encourage you to find ways to let go of anything that no longer serves you. Making peace with yourself and listening to your needs are integral to your wellbeing. Healing from emotional or mental pain and being present in the moment can lead to profound growth. Engage in activities that align with your truest self and dedicate time to simply exist without pressure or expectations. Remember, it's important to be gentle with yourself. Merely surviving a year can be an incredible accomplishment in itself. As you move forward, prioritise your mental and emotional health, and seek support when you need it. Here's to a year of growth, healing, and being present in the moment. ~ Nikki Beautiful photo by: Nick Spence Photography
